17 – 21 July, 2018. Saint-Etienne (France)
From the 17th until the 21st July 2018, Saint-Étienne (France) will welcome the 45th Symposium of International Committee for the History of Technology (ICOHTEC). Historic land of industrial culture and technological innovation, the host region (Firminy) includes the Le Corbusier site which has just been listed as a World Heritage site. Saint-Etienne and its university will serve as a meeting and reflection space for researchers from 5 continents.
These researchers will explore the history of innovation and technologies incorporating the trend of heritage and its major importance in modern society. The transformation of industrial regions is at the heart of this scientific conference. In that respect, there will be extensive discussion about the dynamics of transformation in response to deindustrialization initiated since the end of the 20th century. Also included will be an examination of the patrimonialization of industry and industrial sites as well as the policies of rehabilitation, reallocation, and reindustrialization as factors of emerging territorial, economic, and social dynamics.
The 2018 Symposium of ICOHTEC is intended as a time of exchange but also of a discovery of a region shaped by industry and transfixed by modernity. That is why a large portion of time will be dedicated to visits and interactions with local actors. From technological reconstruction to the recognition of the industrial heritage, Saint-Etienne is a city-wide laboratory that will resonate within the debates of the symposium.
